Wedding Insurance and Illness

Wedding insurance can help cover the costs of cancelling or postponing your wedding in case the bride, groom or close member of the wedding party should fall ill. A serious illness could mean that your wedding cannot proceed as planned – however, with wedding insurance this does not mean you have to lose out financially too.

An insured illness on your wedding insurance policy could include a heart attack, stroke or other debilitating and unexpected illness. Each wedding insurance provider may have different guidelines, so you should check with your wedding insurance to find out what illnesses would be covered for cancellation. You can also confirm who would be covered under this policy, as it is usually only close relatives extending to parents, grandparents and siblings, or someone else who has invested financially in the wedding.

Wedding Insurance

Known, pre-existing conditions are not usually covered by wedding insurance. You should inform your provider in case you or any other immediate member of the wedding party has a serious illness. If you try to claim for cancellation as a result of pre-existing conditions, you may find that your claim is not valid.

Whilst you might like to hope that your family will be in good health, unfortunately illness can happen. NHS Direct received around 6.4 million calls in 2003/04, as people called in concerned about their health.1 Whilst these consultations would be for varying causes, it’s important to remember that illness can strike anyone at any time.

You should keep your family in good health to ensure that the stress and excitement of a wedding do not jeopardise your well being. Look out for signs of illness before they become more serious, and consult a medical professional if you are concerned that you or a member of the wedding party are unwell.

If you or a family member become unwell, and you decide to postpone or cancel your wedding, you should contact your wedding insurance provider immediately. Your insurance company will tell you what information they need to process your claim, including doctor’s certificates, medical records and any other documentation relating to your claim.

Your wedding day should be the start of a healthy and happy life together – thankfully, wedding insurance can play its part in that too. By taking out wedding insurance, you will financially secure your wedding in the unfortunate case that you or a member of the wedding party falls ill.
