The tradition is said to have stemmed from the ancient Cyprus locals who used to hold waterfront festivals in honor of the goddess Aphrodite. Today, the holiday of ‘Kataklysmos’ is celebrated every year, fifty days after Easter. People gather on the waterfronts all over the island, each holding a different fair. They come to enjoy waters sports and waterfront activities. You can expect busy crowds at the beaches and harbors for the duration of the holiday.
3. The Wine Festival. Held in Limassol, the Wine Festival of Cyprus is one of the most prestigious and ancient celebrations on the island. Because of Cyprus’ history with the Greeks, the festival is said to come from Greek festivals where man worshiped Greek gods like Dionysus or goddesses like Aphrodite. The official festival began in 1961 by the municipality and it has continued to be a tradition ever since. It is located on the East side of the city, near the sea.
