Five things you didn’t know about Stansted Airport

Around 19 million passengers use Stansted Airport every year, but there is a lot about the transport hub’s history that the vast majority of travellers do not know.

Rather than wondering about its construction and role in the UK’s past, most people will naturally be focused on getting to their final destination when stepping off their transfer bus. Stansted celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011 - here are some highlights from its past.

Airport Transfers

One

The current Stansted Airport is built on the site of a terminal constructed in 1942 that was used by bombers in 1942 to lead more than 600 aircraft over to France. It was not until 1966 that the British Airports Authority took control of the facility and more than a decade later before significant expansion plans were officially proposed.

Two

Despite serving more than 140 destinations and 20 airlines, the new airport has just one terminal and one runway. Construction on the current £400 million airport started in 1986 and the facility was officially opened by the Queen in 1991.

Planning applications for a second terminal and runway were submitted in 2008, scheduled to open in 2015, but the submission faced a public enquiry in 2009 and was ultimately withdrawn in 2010.

Three

Stansted is the designated airport for hijackers to land if they demand to be allowed to set down their aircraft in the UK. The government chose the location because its design means a plane can land well away from terminal buildings and other travellers.

Four

It is the only London airport to fine airlines when their aircraft persistently go off track and cause noise pollution problems for residents close to flight paths. This is part of its long-term noise strategy plan, which has seen noise levels measured every year since 1993 and allowed Stansted to achieve environmental accreditation for its efforts.

Five

The airport has featured in a number of television series and films. Cinema hits ‘Get Him to the Greek’, ‘Last Chance Harvey’ and ‘United 93′ involved scenes shot at the facility, while both series of ‘Mile High’ were filmed there.

Where to get some winter sun

Driving to work in the dark and arriving home in the dark soon will be upon us with winter drawing in. So where can you go to get some winter sun?

 Winter Sun Holidays

Malta

With only a 3 hour flight time from the UK, Malta is a very popular choice when it comes to some winter sun. With beautiful sandy beaches, the peak season ends in October which means that sea bathing is possible well into the ‘winter months’. The majority of Maltese speak English which makes things a lot easier, although learning thank you (Grazzi) and hello (Merhba) is polite.

There are many activities you can participate in when in Malta, whether you are happy sitting by the pool or at the beach, looking to go on a day cruise round the islands of Gozo and Comino, or fancy a bit of diving in the lovely blue waters, there is plenty to do.

Malta is a strong Catholic country and there are plenty of festivals happening all year round to celebrate holy days (where some are seen as national holidays) and individual villages holding their own festas, honouring their parish patron saint. There are colourful flags and decorations hung up along the roads and food and drink aplenty. There is a massive firework factory on this small island and you can watch some of the most fantastic firework displays you have ever seen during the festivals.

Cyprus

Just slightly further than Malta, Cyprus offers warm days and cool evenings during the winter. Paphos is the liveliest resort on the western end of the island and also the most attractive with plenty to do.

There are loads of activities to take part in when in Paphos, from bowling to boat Safari’s. A major attraction which is fun for all the family is the Aphrodite Water Park which has 26 different rides and leisure activities and a range of restaurants with a wide selection of food.

Filled with bars and clubs you won’t be bored in the evening with live entertainment, local beer and European football to watch. Plenty of restaurants offering local, international and fast food means you won’t be stuck for things to do.

Tenerife

Less than five hours flights away you can enjoy sun, sea and sand on the largest and most populous island of the seven Canary Islands, Tenerife. The island of Tenerife can offer swimming and sunbathing on its beautiful beaches (such as Troya and Las Vistas), but also offers snow a few miles away on the crest of Mount Teide.

Teide National Park is the volcano mountain that occupies central Tenerife. It has been protected since 1954 and is the most popular tourist attraction in Tenerife. You can get to the summit by cable car or hiking. There are some fabulous views over the Island and plenty of different species of lizards and birds can be discovered.

Cruising is a popular activity on the island, with a variety of trips available around the island on a sailing boat. As one of the main migration routes for Whales and dolphins, there is a good chance of seeing these amazing marine mammals.

The Loro Parque (Parrot Park) is a must see. Originally dedicated to Parrots, there are now over 300 different species of parrot and many other animals from Tigers to Sharks can be seen. The Parrot park is home to the worlds largest Penguinarium where 12 tons of snow falls every day to reproduce the Antarctic climate.

Maldives

With a 12 hour flight and beautiful resorts, the Maldives can be pricey but worth it. During January, the small islands average 8 hours of sun a day and offer pleasant warm seas – the perfect idyllic place for some winter sun.

Gorgeous clear blue seas allow for some brilliant diving waters and the views of the sea life can be incredible. There are many water sports available on the Maldives and your hotel can arrange these for you, so choose wisely when picking where to stay.

If you are looking for some relaxation time, then a world-class treatment in a Maldivian spa may be just what you are after.

Honeymooning on these islands is also a popular choice with it’s magically surroundings and secluded setting. Dinner under the stars and a peaceful swim is just what you need for a romantic backdrop.

Don’t forget

If you plan on setting off for some last minute winter sun, don’t forget your instant travel insurance, up-to-date passports, any visa requirements and most importantly your sun protection!

Great times to visit a spa hotel

Many people will tell that there is never a bad time to go to a spa hotel – and you could argue they are right – but there are certain moments during your adult life when they are simply the ideal break.

At times you may feel like doing something a little more energetic; however, the hectic nature of life means a sporting holiday or Ibiza-style vacation can sound like hell at times.

Spa Hotel

So putting aside those moments when you actually have enthusiasm to spare, let’s consider the most appropriate occasions to book into spa hotels:

Celebration

For the good times, a fabulous slice of relaxation can only make things better. So if a friend has just been promoted, got married or become a mother, then a weekend at a spa could be the perfect way to let the good feelings soak in. Let’s face it, all they will do is think about how happy they are about the way things are going for them.

The great thing about a spa is that it can be shared with family, friends and partners. Even if it might be a more stereotypically female pursuit, it should not come as a surprise that the modern man is far more likely to appreciate a spot of pampering than previous generations.

Pick-me-up

As much as a spa hotel break feels like a celebratory sort of holiday, it can equally serve as a way to take someone’s mind off bad news. Tragic events happen every day and people must find ways of getting past them, whether it is something as serious as the death of a loved one or perhaps simply a period of general malaise.

By treating themselves to relaxation sessions, people can concentrate on the feelings of pleasure and rest rather than the emotions that have been getting them down. Do not underestimate how much a weekend away from one’s problems can rejuvenate the mind and body.

Keep the Costs Down by Renting a Gite in France

France is an ideal holiday destination for the UK travellers due to its proximity. For budget travellers there are plenty of cheap ferries available from a number of ports in the UK to travel to France. Besides being economical, a ferry ride is very comfortable. Yes, taking a ferry instead of the more expensive flight can reduce the expenses to some extent. But what about spending on accommodation? A great way to enjoy a perfect holiday in France, while keeping the cost down is to rent gites. Gites is an attractive accommodation option, as it’s more comfortable than camping or a mobile home, and cheaper than hotels. Gites in France is the best bet for money-savvy travellers.

Gîtes are French holiday homes converted from barns, cottages, or other buildings that are no longer used for agricultural work. They range from small privately owned gites suitable for two people to self-catering gites that are fully equipped, which is perfect for families with children. Most modern self-catering gites offer great facilities to enjoy various activities such as golfing, fishing, tennis, hiking and water sports. In general, owners of gites live nearby and treat the tourists as their guest. They take every care to offer the best services to tourists.

Staying in a gite is also the perfect way to explore the countryside as well to enjoy a variety of activities. They’re available across France in various regions such as in the countryside, near the coast or in cities. There are also several types of gites. For instance, Rural Gites are located in countryside either near the coast or mountains offer a wealth of attractive scenery and ideal for shorter stays. A Gite d’Enfants offer accommodation for children and also teach kids about anything from theater to pottery. Gite equestre is an outpost for people travelling on horse, and a Gite d’Etape is like a hostel, where people can stay for a night or two. Stopover Gites are large holiday homes that provide accommodation for 12 to 50 people and are ideal for families or professionals travelling in a group.

Vacationers who want to stay in a gite should check with owners to know about the facilities provided. While some apartments are fully furnished and have televisions, refrigerators and DVD players, others are more rustic and have baths separately. Though gites are quickly booked in the peak holiday season, there is usually a good choice in the spring and early summer. French gites are the perfect place to relax after a cheap ferry crossing across the English Channel and offer a unique experience to travellers.
